The protection pattern
You did not necessarily stop loving each other. You learned to stop reaching.

It often begins with one small moment. You lean in and they pull away. You suggest time together and receive a distracted answer. You try to talk and somehow both of you leave feeling worse.
After enough uncertain or painful responses, reaching starts to feel dangerous. So you protect yourself. Your partner sees the withdrawal and may assume you are no longer interested, or may stop initiating because they do not want to pressure you.
Now both people are waiting for the other to make the first move.
“I cannot keep putting myself out there just to feel unwanted again.”
“I stopped trying because I thought she wanted me to leave her alone.”
Neither thought sounds like, “I no longer love you.” Yet together they create exactly the distance both people fear.
What changes the pattern
The first goal is not immediately restoring everything that has been lost. It is creating invitations small enough that one uncertain response does not feel like a verdict on the entire relationship.
“When you’re rejected for that long, you just shut down emotionally.”Direct customer-language research • Reddit relationship discussion
